It's so weird, I just re-read this piece myself a few weeks ago when I was searching for literary inspiration. I first came across it 30 years ago as part of Gay Talese's collection of short pieces "Fame and Obscurity" in my folks' bookshelf. The book's long gone and I tried looking for it in kindle form but couldn't find it. It's writing like this that keeps me humble.
