Free MoMA!

© Joselito Briones

We got in MoMA for free. That's a big deal, me being the cheapo that I am. I wanted to go there originally this Friday, having heard that entrance feee is waived from 4pm to 8pm Fridays, but what do you know, turned out that Jens now works for a museum (albeit in Boston) and he gets in most museums for free. Company included. How he got to be a museum's resident scientist from being a nano-physicist, I can only wonder. Actually no, I did ask him. He just happens to be one of those smart people who can do plenty of different things. He's taken up bust-portraiture (clay sculpture of heads) recently with impressive results.

The food in the museum cafeteria, "Cafe 2" isn't bad at all either. I had butternut squash ravioli in a very, very rich sauce, and lentl and portobello mushroom soup, both very good. I'd have preferred the ravioli with a simpler, subtler dressing though. The price was just slightly more expensive than the numerous cafe's scattered in the city.

This is one of the most interesting shops in the East Village, called "Search & Destroy". What's on sale are actually, literally, junk. Interesting junk. The junk that some collectors look for. The junk that somebody else's granny threw away that young girls (or boys) might be interested to wear. The kind of junk that you'll never think of finding in a shop. This is one of the shops that make East Village what it is. Don't expect to be buying anything wearable though, unless you're a hardcore hipster, the prices aren't exactly cheap.

Last Union Square photo, promise. Also taken from DSW, I like how the place is covered with snow, and the atmosphere complete opposite of what it looks like in spring and summer (doh) where the place is full of skateboard kids. This photo was post processed, there was way too much difference between the highlights properly exposed (buildings in the background) and the shadows (the whole park) so I had to tweak it a little.

While shopping in DSW, Jane pointed out to me the awesome view from the open windows of the store on the third floor. Above is the view looking northwest, with the Empire State Building on the left, and below is the view looking north east. Naturally, I was too busy looking at the merchandise to notice for myself what's going on outside the building.

Well then, Jimbo... It's been exactly a year since I last saw you, and tonight I'm flying to New York again. I wonder what you look like now. We'll see. I'll be arriving Friday night, with Mati, and Jane has volunteered to pick us up from the airport. I can't wait.

Above is the very last photo I took from my last visit, from the Airtrain service to the airport, in Queens.

So I finally finished my home-video DVD project. I went to the post office to send them to Carmona in the Philippines and to San Lorenzo and to Mountainhouse in California. I wonder how long it's gonna take to reach them.

On something unrelated, I received my first birthday greetings today, two days in advance, from the ever-reliable friend Cyntch. She was craving all sorts of sour things when I last saw her, she's probably very, very pregnant by now.

In the afternoon I packed suitcases to go to Mannheim, and from there, to Frankfurt Airport, to fly tomorrow early afternoon to New York. So yes, Jimmy, I'll see you soon.

I've been working a lot on video editing lately, doing the video for the family christmas party. I've been using iMovie, but I've finally reached the point when it's not enough anymore. I needed more than the single track for video that iMovie provides.

Yesterday, the Final Cut Express software that we bought online arrived finally. It took sometime to install it, and last night I tried to learn the basics - for a 1-hour video that I want to finish by today. Which I did. After not getting up from my chair for the whole day. I'm burning DVD's as I'm writing this.

Lea

Lea Briones© Joselito Briones

Most of the people I know seem to have their birthdays around these three months. Either that or it just so happens that the people born during these first three months are the most willing victims to my camera's experimentations.

Pictured above, of course, is much more than someone I know. She's my Inay. Her name's Lea (yep, like the princess), but everybody in our neighborhood calls her "Aling Sile". I didn't even take this photo of her. It's a studio portrait taken in the first year or two when she moved to California, about 20 years ago. I tried to make it look like a painting, hence the visible photoshop effects.

Meanwhile all the buzz today isn't just about the new shop. A big sporting event was held here in Mannheim - big in that just about any German sports celebrity was there - the boxing match between Germany's adopted son Wladimir Klitschko (watch out, Borat!) and Ray Austin for the world heavyweight title. Klitschko won.

Here's a videoclip of a number some of my nephews and nieces did in the last family christmas party we had in Carmona. I thought Krisi (guitar) looked really great in this clip. With her are Omar (drums), Mark (bass) and Jane (vocals). The number they're doing is called "Kaibigan ko" (My Friend). The sound and video quality is awful, of course, but until I get myself a proper videocam, this will have to do.

At what cost?

© Joselito Briones

This month's issue of VF confused me. I immediately flipped through the pages upon receiving my mailed-in subscription copy, and what did I find? The hotel project that I was working on in New York before I moved to London. I stopped working on it when the owners started failing to pay me - unfunded checks, and after so much trouble trying to collect, a discounted final bill, the works.

And now, one of my favorite magazines has a full page spread calling this hotel "sexy", and a couple more pages of photo spreads and write ups about it. W-Wh-What? At first I thought, how could I NOT have gone through a project that VF would eventually call "sexy"? And then of course, upon reflecting back, I remembered that the idea of the project was sexy to begin with - it was interesting - and that was why I was so enthusiastic to work on it in the beginning. A hotel in an interesting neighborhood of New York, starting to get all the buzz, close to the birthplace of punk BCBG, just north of Soho, and south of East Village, to be opened by the same people who own a happening hotel/club in the meat-packing district.

The work I did (basic floor planning and room layouts), of course, by now would've been totally altered, as is common with any architectural projects. Still I wonder if any of it - hedonism being my guiding idea when working on it - remained. It's burning through my head. Do I want to kick myself? You betcha. Would I have done differently knowing what I know now? Absolutely not.

For one thing, I ask myself, "How did they get away with it?" They were extremely tight with funds (or so they claimed) that they cut at all the not-so-visible proverbial corners. The project was basically a retrofit of a newly built students' dormitory, and the carcass was done - exterior finish and all. The image above, taken with my old cell phone showing the dormitory before it was converted to its current condition, is the only image I have of the project now (I thought it tacky to show you a scan of the bounced check instead). Given, it was the ugliest building in the neighborhood when they started, and they wanted to make it fit to the neighborhood character by making it look like an old brick-faced factory. But the way they had it done! They kept the fake finish, and on top of it, stick flimsy fake bricks. New Yorkers are fond of old utilitarian brick buildings gentrified into a new functional, hip, even sophisticated, use. But if a new ugly building was covered with fake bricks, promote it as authentic, and have VF call it sexy... What's going on?

Let's assume for a while that the VF writer who wrote it completely missed the fake bricks. The interiors after all, at least from the photos in the magazine, really look great. Maybe that's what they meant when they say sexy. Maybe, since I was involved with the project, they have changed the fake plastic mullions of the huge windows into real metal ones. Surely VF wouldn't have praised it if they had stood by the window of a typical bedroom and find that the mullions supposedly holding the glazing together is just a stick-on piece of plastic and can be pulled and flicked on the glass like rubber band?

Or maybe it's just true, what another article in the same issue of the magazine discussed - about media manipulation. The owners of the hotel, who were also owners of the hippest SOHO clubs since the 80's, after all, are extremely media and PR savvy.

A sharp turn

Godfrey in Harlem
© Joselito Briones

I remember the urgency with which he wanted the photos (photo, above, belongs to the set) at the time they were taken. Quickly approaching expiry date was cited as the main reason, referring to his body. Or was that the hair? I can't remember exactly. His latest email did say though that he's shaved his head recently.

Godfrey's a good friend, we used to work for the same midtown firm, remember? Am sure you do, he used to hang out a lot in my apartment after all, back when he was still a promising prospect to becoming a very close friend to Betty Ford's (or at least to Betty Ford's patients). He used to live in Harlem, where the photo above was taken, but has since been enticed by the more affordable property prices in New Jersey. He had to have his homing itch satisfied. How exactly, or when exactly, he managed to do a graceful about-face - from nourishing a next-day hang-over with an eager offer to buy me a drink in one of the numerous bars in my old neighborhood (Hell's Kitchen) to devoting all his time both to work and honing his domestic skills - or if somebody did the transition for him (hi, Scotty!), will always be a puzzle to me.

And, yes, this is a birthday show-and-tell.

After some time I met up with Wil, then Ronnie joined us, for dinner in Kulu Kulu Sushi, a Japanese restaurant in Brewer Street. It's one of those conveyor belt places where coded plates of sushi continuously go around in a conveyor belt and you just grab whichever pleases you. I wonder why they haven't done this with dim sum? Not being able to converse in Cantonese, I am always reduced to chasing after those dim-sum-trolley-pushing-women to see what sort of goodies they have to offer. Maybe a transparent steaming basket need to be invented, because they need to be kept in such baskets to keep them warm, while they also need to be seen so diners know what they're grabbing. Am sure eventually someone will actually do it.

Footballers and their WAGs

Cassie Sumner and a drag queen, Wags boutique, London - photo by Joselito Briones
© Joselito Briones

I woke up with so much pain on my left foot. At first I thought it was just because I walked too much yesterday. Then I started thinking. I had the same intense pain yesterday also, but not for long, when someone in Oxford street, always a crowded place, accidenttally walked onto the outer side of my left foot, exactly where it hurts now. I didn't think of it much yesterday as the pain went away after a few minutes, but today it hurts like hell. Lesson learned: in a city where most men's preoccupation is football and some of whose feet are trained to be strong enough as lethal weapon, DO NOT let anyone's foot anywhere near you.

Having said that, I'm on a holiday and I've got things to do, so walk I did. After several attempts, I found a way of limping that didn't cause too much pain, as long as I don't walk too long or too fast.

In the afternoon, as Wil suggested, I went to Carnaby street to see one of his favorite reality tv shows, "WAGs Boutique", being filmed. It's amazing how with one cameraman and an assistant, and plenty of people with enormous ego, a popular tv show can be made. They all looked like they're just playing a game. Maybe they are. That people are actually watching the show is an enormous credit to human fascination over celebrity, even non-celebrities trying to graduate to B-lister status, and their appendages, are actually watched. And no, I didn't know what a WAG was either, until today - Wives And Girlfriends of footies (football players).

Cassie Sumner, one of the wag contestants, is pictured above with what seems to be this week's task (selling something to drag queens?). It's debated whether or not she even belongs to the show, as Michael Essien of Chelsea, denies ever having her as his girlfriend.

It's a good thing I didn't stay long watching, else I'd have missed the magical early evening light in the city, the deep blue of the sky washing over the white trimmings of brick facades, perfectly framing the golden glow of interior lamps. When it got completely dark I went back to National Portrait Gallery and studied portraits of celebrities of the real kind - from royalties to fashion icons - resting assured that no one here will kick my foot.

Confessions Revisited

plastic flowers in wil's beer garden, london - photo by joselito briones
© Joselito Briones

Right after confessing to me that he has designed a lighting set up in in the living room, which he proudly refers to as "beer garden look" (pertaining to the seedy places in the Philippines where people get drunk and gawk at strippers, not the European establishments dedicated to their beloved refreshment - photo above is of one of the decorations), and showing it to me, Wil and I watched the DVD of the confessions tour, which we saw live in Amsterdam late last year. Everything was enhanced tenfolds: the good parts looked so much better, the choreography, the movement of the dancers, facial expressions lost on the stage from where we sat. Even at the concert it was obvious she had a great videographer, and it showed even more so in the videos.

Unfortunately, the failures also became more visible. And interestingly enough the details of the manipulation of the audience are also now very much visible. Where she succeeded, it's amazing how much she can solicit from the audience, when she failed, it made me want to just click the fast forward button. One of the most interesting things in the extras is finding out that the awesome freerunner from the James Bond movie, Sebastien Foucan, was involved in the choreography, and Wil's favorite back-up dancer, Daniel "Cloud" Campos, whom he told me was part-Filipino, was also highlighted.

Valentine's day dinner

Poor Jerome. He should've known better than to bring his Valentine's Day present for Ronnie to Wil's. Upon greeting Jerome at the door, Wil immediately asked if the flowers that Jerome was carrying was for him. Wil being the host and Jerome the guest, there was really nothing else for him to say but yes, indeed he bought the flowers for Wil. Upon hearing the commotion at the door, I took a peek. When Jerome saw that I saw him giving the flowers to Wil, he was forced to give me something too, to be fair. He handed me the box of chocolates he was holding. Good thing he still had one more thing in his hands, a bottle of pink champagne from BrĂĽt, which he immediately handed to Ronnie, the intended recipient of all three presents, in case somebody else turns up to greet him at the door and he'd have to give up the champagne to somebody else, too.

On the menu tonight was roast leg of lamb, and honeycomb cannelloni with tomato and mushroom ragu, which Wil prepared while Ronnie and I watched (photo, above).

He had to return to the grocery store a couple of times, having forgotten some rather key ingredients (for a dish that's basically cannelloni in tomato-based sauce, he forgot to buy both cannelloni and tomato).

Of dreams and videos

© Joselito Briones

Whoever said that there is something that connects people subconsciously together via dreams and thoughts must be on to something. Last night I dreamt of Noel, one of my brothers who live in the Yay! area in California, and this morning the first thing that I see upon turning on the computer was an email from him. And no, we don't regularly email each other nor do I constantly dream of him, or anyone and anything for that matter. I know. Coincidence. Anyway, his email was an inquiry as to what happened to the tapes from when I recorded his kids on video, while performing for the christmas party in the Philippines. Guess I'm gonna have to go through the tapes soon. After the London trip.

I also went to the doctor today, finally, after deciding that ice cream and aspirins aren't getting rid of my mandeln fast enough. It's almost gone, but it's still slightly uncomfortable when I swallow. He prescribed some antibiotics, and said that the mandeln thing is going around in Erlangen, and that he's examined a few too many other patients suffering from the same condition. He also said if it happens too often, like 3 times a year, then I should consult a heart doctor because those might very well be connected to each other.

Almost there

San Francisco, California - Part of Almost there series
© Joselito Briones

This is another picture I didn't notice until I started organizing my pictures yesterday. It's a house in San Francisco, I can't remember where exactly, and it was a part of a school project for when I took architectural photography classes in Berkeley extension in Martket St.

It's part of a collection that I call "Almost There", of photographs of entrance porches of houses in San Francisco. I wanted to invoke the feeling of relief and security one has upon having into view his entrance porch, after a day's work or after being away for some time. Maybe I didn't like this particular photo then because it's not very sharp, but now I look at it and think that sharpness shouldn't really be the deciding factor on whether to keep a photo or not. Or maybe I'm just reeling from the onslaught of hypersharp images that keep on cropping up everywhere these days. I particularly like the atmosphere on this one.

Here's a digitally enhanced film version of the photo of Taal Volcano, as viewed from Tagaytay. I think last time I showed you the digital version of this, it was accompanied by complaints about food there, so I'm making this one into another foodie, with a recipe for fresh fennel atsara (more like a salad).

Fresh fennel salad (for 2)

Ingredients:
1 bulb fennel, finely sliced and thoroughly washed,
1 small red onion, roughly chopped
1 carrot, diced or cut into decorative shapes
1 tsp. grated fresh ginger
fresh chillies or pepperoni - as hot as you can take, optional
juice of 1/2 lemon
1 tsp. vinegar
palm sugar to taste
salt and pepper

Mix fennel with vinegar and lemon juice with hand thoroughly, squeezing the fennel slices. Add ginger, palm sugar, carrots, chillies, and onions. Toss. Add salt and pepper. Chill before serving.

It goes really well with any grilled or roasted meat.

Sleek Hong Kong: The Departed

Bank of China building by I.M.Pei, Admiralty, Hong Kong - photo by Joselito Briones
© Joselito Briones

Just so you won't get the impression that Hong Kong is all old and monotonous, here's a photo of one of the best buildings there, in Admiralty. It's already an icon in Hong Kong, of course, the Bank of China, by I. M. Pei. The best time to look at it is the early evening in Autumn, when the sky is clear and deep blue, there's no fog, and you can see the lines clear and sharp all the way to the top.

As this is the last Hong Kong image I'll be showing you for a while, I'll just write here something else that Hong Kong is famous for. Movies! Action movies to be exact. Okay, fine, it's not about a Hong Kong movie, but something based on one.

The movie, of course, is "The Departed", based in Hong Kong's 2002 critically acclaimed thriller "Infernal Affairs".

The Departed movie promotional image

And what a movie! The cast was excellent, especially Mark Wahlberg and his filthy-mouthed character. Jack Nicholson just cruised through it, like it's all fun and play for him. Matt Damon adopted his inscrutable poker-faced persona in the "Bourne Identity" franchise, and even Leonardo di Caprio, who showed teen-level angst in what is meant to be a grown-up role, managed to project a bit of grit in his eternally pre-pubescent voice. The star of the movie though, no question asked, is director Martin Scorsese. The way he constructed the twists and plots was the work of a true master. It was also great that, in what I assume other people would see as plot holes, instead of spoon-feeding us, the audience, with every details, he let us figure things out for ourselves. Ok fine, there are still holes in the plot, but who cares! The tension was unrelenting in the whole movie, there was no chance to think of inconsistencies - until the next day when you've had about 24 hours to mull things over.

I'm not even putting a synopsis here. Go watch it, it's great!

Photo taken in Cat Street, Hong Kong.

And another recipe for Wil:

Baked Ribs

Marinate ribs in:
1 Lemon Juice
1 Onion (or 3 shallots)
3 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp brown sugar
1 tsp A1 sauce (optional)

In a baking tray, put marinated ribs in preheated oven (220 C), bone curve up, for 20 minutes. Take out the tray, cover with aluminum foil, put back in, for at least an hour. Remove cover, and flip ribs. Broil for 10 minutes.

Staying Low

Last remaining low buildings in Midlevels, as seen from Josen's apartment, Hong Kong - photo by Joselito Briones

This photo was also taken in Hong Kong, in Midlevels, and interesting in that these are among the very few low buildings remaining in (Midlevels). Most of the buildings in this area (mostly residential) are like the ones I posted a few days ago. This one was also taken from Josen's apartment window, looking down.

I know, by now you're probably tired of photos I took in Hong Kong. But I want to post them anyway, and it's not like I've got a lot of things to tell you presently, so this'll have to do. This one's also taken from Josen's apartment in Midlevels, in the south side.

This is what one can photograph from Josen's apartment window, and I guess from just about anybody's apartment window in Midlevels. Taken new year's day in Hong Kong.

Images of Hong Kong II

Tung Street, Hong Kong - photo by Joselito Briones

This is from the same series as yesterday's photo, same technique. This is the street where I lived for a year or two, in an apartment that used to be occupied by Hon and Dwayne.

Images of Hong Kong

Peel Street, hong kong - photo by Joselito Briones

First scan of film photos from hong kong. This was taken in Peel Street, which runs perpendicular to Hollywood Road. With such a high tonal differences between the highlights (in this case, the sun in direct view) and the shadows, I used the old reliable -3 technique with kodak tmax100 film and rodinal.

Nathan Road

More leftover photo from Hong Kong. I picked up the film versions from Frankenlabor today, so by tomorrow I could probably show you the proper photos. Not that Nathan Road is all like this. It's a mixture of high-end shops, old dirty-looking buildings, and lots and lots of tourists.

Overspill

As I said yesterday, next few days will probably be overspill of holiday pics, both from Hong Kong and Philippines, while I try to catch up with everyday humdrum here in Erlangen. This one's in Hong Kong, perpendicular to Hollywood Road, next to Man Mo Temple.
